Quidditch is changing its name to quadball to cut ties with J.K. Rowling | CNN

CNN
 —

Quidditch, the real-life sport inspired by the airborne game played by young wizards in “Harry Potter,” is ditching its whimsical name. Now, athletes will mount broomsticks to play quadball.

US Quadball and Major League Quadball, the sports’ two governing bodies in North America, both announced the new name of “quadball” this week, which is set to go into effect this summer. The International Quidditch Association plans to adopt the new name, too, the organizations said.

There were two reasons for the name change, per the governing bodies: The sport wanted to separate itself from “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling and her anti-transgender rhetoric. Also, neither organization owned the “quidditch” trademark. (Warner Bros., which owns the “quidditch” trademark, and CNN share parent company Warner Bros. Discovery.)

Rowling has increasingly shared views that take aim at transgender people, particularly trans women. Her comments have alienated many of her fans and several of the actors who brought her stories to screen, including Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, who have both publicly supported trans people.

Both organizations denounced her positions, saying that the sport was “one of the most progressive sports in the world on gender equality,” referencing a rule that requires teams to have no more than four players of the same gender on the field at once.

And so, last December, the then-quidditch leaders decided to find a new name for the sport by surveying players. Options at the time included quadraball, quidball and the eventual winner, among others.

“This name change is a game changer for us, and we are looking to make the most of it,” Major League Quadball’s founders said in an open letter to players.

The sport formerly known as quidditch came to the Muggle world in 2005, when two Middlebury College students started playing it on their campus. The game is a mix of rugby and dodgeball, among others, and features hoops that players must hoist balls through. Players must be mounted on broomsticks throughout the game.

Since its founding, the sport has expanded to 40 countries and nearly 600 teams, according to the governing bodies.

Tommy Lee’s wife Brittany Furlan revealed she’s in a good place with his ex-wife, Pamela Anderson, following a recent rumored feud between the ladies. The comedian, 36, made the announcement on Friday night, March 31 after her stand-up set at Hollywood’s Improv club. “We’re all good. We want happiness, we want everyone to be friends,” she said to TMZ.

The drama began after fans claimed Brittany was dragging Pamela in a since-deleted TikTok. In it, Brittany used a “90s Pam Makeup” filter on herself and pretended to be the Baywatch star barely reacting to Brittany’s hypothetical death, according to TMZ. “Pam if I died,” Brittany had tagged the clip. The comic would end up writing, “Pls guys I gotta make jokes it’s how I cope,” before deleting the video altogether.

On Friday, Brittany told TMZ that she has yet to hear from Pamela after the TikTok video went viral. However, she said that she would be more than happy to sit down with the actress and hash it all out, per the outlet.

Prior to the self-deprecating TikTok, Brittany had shared a video letting her fans know how she was doing after the release of Pamela’s documentary and memoir Love, Pamela. In them, the Barbed Wire vet spoke extensively about her rocky 1995-1998 marriage to Tommy Lee, which caused some online hate towards Brittany, per People.  “I’m lucky to have a really loving husband who honestly laughs all the stuff off and could care less,” Brittany said in the clip, according to the outlet. “So, don’t worry about anything and thank you to everyone that’s been sticking up for me”

Pamela, who shares two sons, Brandon and Dylan, with Tommy, has not commented on the Brittany TikTok drama. In addition, she appeared to cheer on the couple, who married in 2019, when she made an appearance on The Howard Stern Show in January.

“He’s married and happy, and she’s good to him and I totally support that and think that’s great,” Pamela told the shock jock.  “I hate to be annoying and going through this again. I’m sure she’s annoyed, but I respect their relationship, and [I’m] just glad he’s happy and he has somebody in his life.”

Mary Fitzgerald revealed she and her husband Romain Bonnet suffered a miscarriage. The Selling Sunset star, 42, took to her Instagram on Friday, March 31 to share the heartbreaking news, saying they had initially discovered they were expecting their first child together during their honeymoon to Indonesia in January. “We were in Bali, we got pregnant and, unfortunately, that didn’t work out.,” Mary explained.

She also said that there were complications. “I also apparently had what they called septic miscarriage, so I had to go in for surgery for that,” Mary added, referencing a miscarriage with a uterine infection.

“The reason why I’m speaking out now is because I do realize how common this is and how many people go through this, and it is not easy,” she continued. “I needed a minute because there are so many eyes on me and everyone judges and everything, and it has been rough to say the least, but there’s still hope.”

The caption for the video was filled with as much heartbreak and hope as the video itself. “It’s not always sunshine and butterflies, and that is ok. I wanted to share this in the hopes of letting others know they are not alone. I promised I would be truthful and keep you guys updated, ” Mary wrote. “We won’t be giving up… and if this message speaks to you in any way or you are feeling down, helpless, alone… please know we are in this together. Hang in there…”

Romain commented on the post and showed off his unwavering love and support for his new bride. “It’s just the beginning of our journey my princess and i promise I will always be here to support you in every step of the way ❤️❤️,” the 30-year-old realtor wrote.

Meanwhile, Mary, who has one adult son from a previous relationship, spoke EXCLUSIVELY with HollywoodLife about her and Romain’s 12-year age difference, which at one time appeared to be a real concern for Selling Sunset fans. “I don’t let it get to me too much. I just try to ignore most of it. I know who I am. I know what my relationship is with Romain. We’re very secure. I don’t try to pay too much attention to it,” she told HL.
