Rumors about Henry Cavill’s potential DC return as Superman have kicked up a flurry of excited reactions from fans. In 2013, WB launched the DCEU through Zack Snyder’s Superman movie Man of Steel with Cavill as the face of the franchise. The actor’s turn as Clark Kent/Kal-El won him international recognition, and he soon returned to reprise his role in the 2016 follow-up Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Afterward, he also starred alongside an ensemble of superheroes in 2017’s Justice League, before making his supposedly final DCEU appearance in the 2021 director’s cut of the same film.
At the time Justice League was released, Cavill was said to be under contract to play Superman again, but those plans did not materialize as reports surfaced that DC was instead looking to replace him as its flagship superhero. In the following days, prospects of Cavill’s return to the character seemed even bleaker, as the actor committed to two Netflix franchises (The Witcher and Enola Holmes). DC moved forward with new Superman projects – a Val-Zod TV show with Michael B. Jordon and a standalone film by J.J. Abrams – without any signs of Cavill’s involvement. Many had lost hope of ever seeing Cavill don the cape again, so it was a big shock when a recent report indicated that Cavill could appear as Superman at the SDCC WB/DC panel on Saturday. Although it remains to be seen if such an appearance will happen, even the prospect of Cavill taking the stage excites audiences.
Now fans have taken to social media to express their delight and anticipation over Cavill’s speculated return as Superman at SDCC 2022. For some, an announcement about Superman’s DCEU future would be the highlight of the whole event, and many are also expressing their wishes about what they hope to see for the character moving forward. Check out fans’ reactions to Cavill’s rumored Superman return below.

My dream scenario for Henry Cavill’s Comic-Con appearance:

Clearly, and rather unsurprisingly, fans are stoked about Cavill’s alleged return as Superman. Hilariously, a few of the reactions poke fun at the DCEU’s references to the character in recent projects. Ever since the franchise has distanced itself from Cavill, there have been sporadic “headless” Superman cameos in some notable projects like Peacemaker and Shazam. Clearly, those did not satiate fans’ longing for a full Superman appearance, and now they are hoping that WB and DC sincerely honor their wishes. Some particular reactions also hype a showdown between Cavill’s Superman and Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam. The clash is something both actors have expressed interest in, and considering that Black Adam also has a presence at SDCC, it would be the most opportune time for DC to confirm the much-anticipated conflict.
Finally, aside from the expected enthusiasm, some fans are also a bit apprehensive of what Cavill’s Superman return at SDCC could entail. Some dread that Cavill might announce his retirement, although that is a more unlikely scenario given that DC would not want to deliver discouraging news when they are at SDCC to promote their upcoming films. There is also some general curiosity about the direction WB and DC could take for Cavill’s superhero. After all, Snyder, who previously directed Cavill in the role, has disassociated himself with the studio, so any potential Superman project would likely see new directors take over Snyder’s duties. A few fans have also opined whom they would like to see collaborate with Cavill for future movies, but considering that the full scope of his potential Superman return is not currently known, it’s too soon to have such discussions.
