Logan director James Mangold is in talks to direct DC Universe’s Swamp Thing movie. The future of the DCU under DC Studios’ co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran became more clear at long last recently. After months of secrecy about what was being planned, 10 DCU movies and TV shows were officially announced by Gunn and Safran as part of the first chapter of their Phase 1 slate. New movies featuring Superman and Batman headline the development, but it also included the confirmation that a Swamp Thing movie was in development. Gunn and Safran kept most other details about the film to themselves, though.
According to a report from THR, James Mangold is reportedly in early talks to direct DC’s Swamp Thing movie. The news comes after the director shared a cryptic post on Twitter that included Swamp Thing.
James Mangold directing DC’s Swamp Thing movie comes after reports previously circulated that he was excited to work with James Gunn at DC Studios. While the filmmaker’s involvement in the supernatural DC movie was not officially announced as part of the Phase 1 reveals, James Gunn retweeted Mangold’s Swamp Thing tweet, indicating that the talks are indeed ongoing. According to Deadline, there is currently no script for the project. Swamp Thing is also not expected to happen until after Mangold finishes Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and directs a Bob Dylan biopic starring Timotheé Chalamet.
What James Mangold Directing Swamp Thing Means For The DCU
James Mangold directing Swamp Thing for the DCU is certainly an exciting possibility, but it does mean that audiences will have to wait a bit longer to see the giant DC monster on the big screen again. Since he has plans to make his Bob Dylan biopic next after Indiana Jones 5, he will not have time to begin prepping Swamp Thing until after 2024 at the earliest. DC Studios wants to release two DCU movies per year starting in 2025, but there is no path for Swamp Thing to join Superman: Legacy as the second 2025 film. It might even have to wait until 2027 or later depending on how long the Bob Dylan biopic takes.
Waiting a few years for the Swamp Thing movie directed by James Mangold could change the DCU plans. Since the first chapter of Phase 1 is known as Gods and Monsters, including a monster-type character like Swamp Thing could be a big piece of the overall narrative. That could be a point in the negotiations between Mangold and DC Studios that becomes a sticking point for the deal. If Gunn needs Swamp Thing to come out before some unannounced projects, Mangold and DC’s schedule could not align. Hopefully, that is not the case and DC Studios lands an incredible director for the DCU Phase 1 movie.
The Swamp Thing movie is confirmed to be a dark origin story for the character, and that could mean a more adult-oriented superhero film from Mangold and DC Studios. He has experience directing R-rated superhero movies thanks to Logan, so there is a chance that Swamp Thing will do the same. His DCU movie should be very different from Logan, though, as it could be less action-based and more of a supernatural thriller. That can make Swamp Thing a pivotal part of the DCU future in terms of diversifying the types of stories it tells, whether James Mangold directs or not.
