Zachary Levi discusses the prospects of Shazam! 3 at the San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC). David F. Sandberg brought C. C. Beck and Bill Parker’s beloved comics character to life with his 2019 Shazam! movie that saw Asher Angel’s troubled orphan, Billy Batson, transform into the eponymous adult superhero (Levi). A light-hearted and enjoyable blockbuster, Shazam! offered a break from the franchise’s austere and gritty tone, reforming the superhero genre within the DCEU. Its success expectedly warranted a sequel, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which raises the stakes from the original movie, chronicling a bigger and broader story that pays more attention to its supporting cast.
Set to release on the coming Christmas, WB and DC hosted a panel at the SDCC on Saturday to promote the Shazam! sequel. During the event, the official trailer for Shazam! Fury of the Gods was released, previewing the sinister plans of the new villains (Helen Mirren’s Hespera and Lucy Liu’s Kalypso). The video also teased the endearing familial bonds among the Shazam family siblings, emphasizing the relationships and individual journeys of the characters. Interestingly, some callbacks to the Justice League superheroes like Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and Ben Affleck’s Batman strengthened the Shazam! film series’ connectivity to the larger DCEU. And now, there is also some information about whether there are any plans to explore these tie-ins and stories for the Shazam family superheroes in the future.
During Shazam! Fury of the Gods SDCC panel, where Screen Rant was also present, Levi addressed a question asking if there have been conservations for a threequel. While Levi didn’t confirm any talks for Shazam! 3, he did point out that it was very much a possibility. However, the decision would depend on the response to Fury of the Gods. Therefore, he encouraged fans to watch the movie in theatres because if there is a demonstrated interest in the sequel, “the bosses will want to make another one.”
Levi’s response is very realistic. In addition to receiving rave reviews, the Shazam! movie had proved financially viable for DC and WB, earning nearly $370 million against an $80-100 million budget. For the upcoming film, the commercial prospects appear even brighter, considering that bigger names are attached to the sequel and the enthralling mythical locales and supernatural creatures in Shazam! 2 are attracting a lot of attention. Additionally, the response to the trailer has also been decidedly enthusiastic, with fans praising the canonical connection with Justice League, Levi’s goofy comedic chops, and fitting pop-culture references and homages, such as Mirren’s Fast and Furious role. The release window is also quite opportune, so if things fall into place, Shazam! Fury of the Gods can end up being a much bigger success than the original movie.
Of course, the revenue and reception are key factors in determining if Shazam! 3 would happen, but apart from that, there also needs to be some narrative potential the filmmakers can utilize. With a two-year time jump in Shazam! 2, Billy is already approaching adulthood, and his siblings are also planning their next career moves. Hence, Shazam! Fury of the Gods will need to address this change and determine if and how could the Shazam Family are able to use their superpowers after they have turned 18. Once that challenge is resolved, it will be easy for a threequel to pick up the characters’ stories and progress them by approaching the superheroes as young adults. Considering that Sandberg would presumably want to complete a trilogy for his beloved film franchise, or even go beyond that, he would have surely planned the sequel’s ending in a way that Billy’s and siblings’ lives remain ripe for more stories in a potential Shazam! 3. In any case, the scope of a threequel would become clear once Shazam! Fury of the God premieres.
