How to Get Rid of That Mosquito Bite, Fast

Published

on

Few things are more annoying than coming home from your weekend trip or outdoor happy hour covered in mosquito bites. First order of business: figuring out how to get rid of mosquito bites. While the itching and swelling usually go away after a week (depending on how your immune system handles the bites), the dark spots and scarring left behind from scratching can last far longer.

“Mosquito bites have the potential to cause a local reaction that peaks after 20 to 30 minutes,” says board-certified anesthesiologist and physician Azza Halim, MD. This reaction usually manifests as inflammation, itching, discomfort, and visible red bumps. When you can’t resist scratching these bites, they can scar, turn into dark spots, or even get infected.

Avoiding bites with bug screens and netting, mosquito repellent, and clothing is the easiest way to not deal with any of the above. But when you inevitably get bitten this summer, here’s how to get rid of mosquito bites according to the experts.

What should I do when I get bitten by a mosquito?

Immediate care can make a big difference in how fast your bite goes down. Dr. Halim recommends washing any bites first, then applying a cold compress and topical hydrocortisone cream. While it’s a good idea to always keep a tube on hand during the warmer months, you can also apply a paste of baking soda and water, or a dab of toothpaste with baking soda. “Don’t scratch the area, as that can stimulate a histamine response cycle as well as increase risk of infection,” she says.

Another easy way to naturally slow inflammation from bites is ice. “If you ice immediately, you can stop inflammation in its tracks,” says dermatologist Ava Shamban, MD. Extreme cold temperatures are key to reducing swelling—but in order to keep from further irritating your skin, wrap the ice cubes or an ice pack in a towel.

How can I tell whether I’m allergic to mosquito bites?

“Your body’s immune response to a mosquito bite can vary from mild to allergic to severe reactivity, which determines how much of a red itchy lump results from the bite,” says Dr. Halim.

If your itching is especially large, bruised, or raised into hives and welts, you’re likely allergic. Severe cases can also result in fever, difficulty breathing, and swelling of your throat. Most allergic reactions can be treated with Benadryl, calamine lotion, and anti-itch creams. “Use an EpiPen if your airway or respiratory symptoms are involved,” says Dr. Halim. And in severe cases, visit your doctor immediately.

How long do mosquito bites last?

Most mosquito bites will heal in 10 days, but Dr. Halim says that you can speed it up to five to seven if you’re diligent with care. After washing and cooling your bites immediately, resist the urge to scratch them in the following days. If they start getting itchy, cool them or apply hydrocortisone and soothing topicals for relief. You can also use aloe vera gel and OTC oral antihistamines to get rid of them faster.

The Best Dressed Stars This Week Chose Unexpected Shapes

Published

on

This week, the best dressed stars embraced theatricality on the red carpets. Big, bold silhouettes prevailed at movie premieres and Hollywood parties—whether it was dresses with voluminous ruffles, slouchy denim boots, or even sequined hoods. The memo among A-listers was to expect the unexpected when it came to their fashion choices.

Some of the standouts this week? Certain celebrities opted for vintage ensembles with strong shapes. Take Sydney Sweeney at the HCA TV Awards this weekend, when she revived a Mugler dress from 1981 that had exaggerated peplums. Or Kylie Jenner, who celebrated her 25th birthday this weekend in a vintage Paco Rabanne look. The silvery getup complete with a disco ball-like hood, which was ready to party the night away in.

Impactful colors also had a moment. On the Jimmy Fallon show, Never Have I Ever star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan opted for a Zimmermann floral dress with tons of ruffles, While out in New York, Lili Reinhart also slipped into Tory Burch’s sporty dress with a dash of yellow color-blocking. Speaking of New York, however, there was one city street style moment that truly stole the show: When Rihanna emerged in Y/Project’s extra-slouchy denim boots, fresh off the runway. A head-turning accessory only the Bad Gal herself could truly pull off.

Which were your favorite celebrity looks this week? Be sure to vote below, and check back on Friday to see which ensemble is the ultimate best dressed of the week.

The Kardashian-Jenners Show Three Ways to Modernize Body-Con Dresses

Published

on

If you’ve been following the Kardashian-Jenners since their early days on Keeping Up With the Kardashians, you’ll know that the stylish siblings have always loved a body-con dress: Kim, Kourtney, and Khloe in particular. The show skyrocketed to fame in the early 2010s, after all—there was no better time for skintight Hervé Léger bandage dresses. Over the years, the five siblings’ personal styles may have evolved, but their penchant for form-fitting frocks has never quite quit (Kim, for instance, has been favoring Balenciaga’s spandex catsuits lately). This weekend on Instagram, Kylie posted a new photo with Kendall and Kim, and their trio of summery outfits showcased a more modern update on their signature body-con dressing.

Posing aboard a yacht for Kylie’s 25th birthday celebrations, the three sisters did figure-hugging dresses in a fresh, new way. Kylie wore a sequined and sheer off-the-shoulder dress, complete with an asymmetrical high slit. It’s a more minimal (and elegant) take on the vacuum-sealed style. Kim opted for a shredded red Rick Owens gown that had one long sleeve, her design favoring the more futuristic vibe she’s been channeling as of late. Kendall, meanwhile, slipped into a two-piece, choosing a glitzy bra top and skirt that’s perfect for a night out.

Fashion in general has been moving back towards body-con silhouettes—see the clingy pieces at Mugler, Jacquemus, and Eckhaus Latta—so the Kardashian-Jenners are clearly onto something with keeping their signature sexy look alive. It would be a sight to see the Kardashian-Jenners slip back into their 2010s club wear—but their 2022 takes on the vibe is pretty close. They’re a little more (okay a lot more) current.

What? Cardi B Reveals She Uses Boiled Onions to Wash Her Hair

Published

Homemade hack! Cardi B is proud of her long locks thanks to an unusual shampooing process.

“My last 2 washes I been boiling onions and using the water to wash my hair.” the “Bodak Yellow” songstress, 29, wrote via Instagram on Friday, August 12, alongside a photo of her long, natural hair. “I used to do this 6 years ago when I started my healthy hair growth journey.”

She added: “I stopped cause I got really lazy. It’s odorless and I notice that it’s been giving a shine to my hair.”

The New York native’s social media followers were quickly amazed that the water from the vegetables could help her hair grow without a strong aroma. “Dominican remediesssss 😂,” one Instagram user replied.

The rap star is not the only one to wash her hair with onions. In fact, Illuminate Labs’ Dr. Andrea Paul told MarthaStewart.com in March that applying onion juice on the scalp is good to treat hair loss due to the amino acids, which help restore hair follicles. She added: “For convenience, it probably makes sense to apply the treatment prior to showers, as it will be quite pungent.”

While Cardi — who shares daughter Kulture, 4, and son Wave, 11 months, with husband Offset — did not further detail her haircare routine, she’s previously been candid about her go-to beauty products.

“Would you shower at my place?” she previously captioned an August 2021 photo of her bathroom via Twitter, showing off tubs of Vaseline, Dove body wash, Degree deodorant, Dr. Teals scrubs and Lubriderm lotion.

The Hustlers actress continued at the time: “I loooveeeee to exfoliate down south with [the St. Ives Apricot scrub] after I shave. I can’t laser or wax til I give birth [with baby No. 2] so I like to exfoliate right after I shave. Body scrubs is good for the leg & body but I feel is too oily for the bikini line.”

Cardi has also frequently made headlines through the years over her changing hairstyles and wigs, but her natural look has remained one of her favorites.

“OK guys, so this is really how my hair is,” Cardi said in a June 2020 Instagram Story video. “My hair gets like this when you blow dry it and then two days later it looks puff puff like this. Even when you braid it.”

The “WAP” performer told her social media fans that she calls her hair “straight” which is different from Kulture and her “little coils” of curls.

“All the good things that you put in your body, you gotta put in your hair,” she added in the clip, noting that she swears by a DIY hair mask using avocado, raw eggs, mayonnaise and more. “You’re not gonna put soda in your hair because soda ain’t good for your body.”

She continued: “This treatment is really good for curl patterns. I don’t really have a curl pattern but my baby does.”
