Rare Move! Ariana Grande Goes Makeup-Free to Promote New R.E.M. Concealer

Ariana Grande‘s new R.E.M. Beauty concealer is just like magic! The singer tested out the product for fans, and the coverage is out of this world.

On Monday, July 25, the “7 Rings” artist, 29, shared a video via her Instagram Story that shows her rocking a fresh face. “Before,” Grande captioned the makeup-free clip, tagging her cosmetics brand. The hitmaker then posted a selfie of herself glammed up after using R.E.M.’s new color corrector. “After!!!!” the musician proudly wrote alongside the photo.

The concealer, named Sweetener, is set to launch on Thursday, July 28, in 60 different shades. “Ready to find your true match?” the official R.E.M. Beauty Instagram account wrote alongside a promotional shot of the makeup — which is seen floating in space — on Tuesday, July 26. “All 60 shades of our new #sweetener concealer have been cleared for landing! head to our Instagram story now for a breakdown of every shade before they go live on rembeauty.com 🪐 check out the entire assortment + find your perfect pairing ahead of the chapter 4 launch on 7.28 – then get ready to add to cart!”

Earlier on Tuesday, the brand revealed the concealer is made with hyaluronic acid and Vitamin E to leave “skin sweeter than before.”

The Grammy winner launched the beauty label in November 2021. The first drop, called Chapter 1, included an eyeliner marker, pencil liners, mascara and three eyeshadow palettes. Each iteration of the collection is rolled out with an intergalactic theme.

The Florida native opened up about the project in September of last year, telling Allure she kept the brand under wraps for quite some time.

“Covering the secret for the past two years and having testers and samplers in my purse and people asking me, ‘Oh, I love your highlight, what are you wearing?’ And me being like, ‘I don’t know, sweating,’” she told the outlet. “It was so hard to keep a secret for this long.”

Exciting as this collection may be, Grande wasn’t blind to the fact that celebrity-backed beauty brands are a dime a dozen these days.

“I don’t want to just hop onto any bandwagons ever,” she said to Allure. “I think that … I wear my peers’ makeup as well, just like I listen to their music. I’m not going to say, ‘Oh, there’s too many female artists.’ I love and I’m [a] huge fan of my peers that do both, and I think that it’s just another way to tell stories. Because you can never have enough makeup, just like you can never have enough music.”

Crystals, Cowboy Hats, Durags, and Dinner Jackets: Guests Went All Out at Born x Raised’s Annual Sadie Hawkins Winter Formal

For one of the biggest bashes of the year, the annual Born x Raised Sadie Hawkins Winter Formal has always maintained an IYKYK vibe, and this year was no different. Hundreds of people, all of whom somehow seemed to know each other, turned out in their finest duds to attend the function, which the brand’s cofounder Chris “Spanto” Printup describes as “a wedding meets a bar mitzvah meets a quinceañera.” 

Wearing a Grace Jones–inspired suit embellished with pieces from Diné (Apache) jeweler Lionel Thundercloud, Printup set the dress code for the night, which was held at DTLA’s Soho Warehouse. “People in Los Angeles want to dress up, and they don’t always get to,” said Born x Raised’s Alex “2Tone” Erdmann as he mingled with guests on the rooftop pool deck. “They have all these wonderful outfits and really show out and get dressed to the nines.” That said, attendees had been warned in advance that the dress code was strictly no streetwear and “if you show up in a Born x Raised hoodie, you will be tarred and feathered at the door.”  

The night kicked off with a dinner sponsored by Nike, which collaborated on a limited-edition Air Force 1 Low sneaker to mark the occasion. But what was billed as an intimate dinner for 100 people steadily multiplied over the evening, with guests sharing both their seats and plates of wild arugula salad and sea bass as each wave of new friends arrived. 

Among those in attendance for the pre-party cocktails and dinner were Danny Trejo, Miguel, Nadia Lee Cohen, Freddie Gibbs, Kirsty Godso, YG, and Mister Cartoon. “I had to come as the black James Bond this year,” said Gibbs as he lined up to have a prom-style portrait taken by photographer Carlos Jaramillo—a highlight of the event. “I always have to come as the best dressed at the Sadie Hawkins. You just gotta stay dapper at all times.” 

Created in 2013, Born x Raised’s founders describe the brand as a love letter to their hometown, eschewing the city’s influencer culture in favor of people who power the real LA, and the party as a celebration of its creative community. “When I grew up in LA, it was a huge melting pot for all different cultures,” Printup told Vogue. “That’s what we’re re-creating with everyone here in this room. It’s the most well-rounded mix, and it’s the party I want to be at.”

Colorists Mark William Selley and Halley Brisker created the dimensional color, which felt all the more effulgent when secured with a gilded accessory in the back. The standout moment was rounded out by Boynton’s usual artistically driven, ‘60s-inspired eyes (separated lashes, well-placed rhinestones, and swipes of onyx), feathered brows, and a pink lip executed by makeup Jo Baker. Should the last lap of the year find you in something of a rut, make like Boynton and embrace that “New Year, New Me” mentality early.
