A new image from Spider-Man: Freshman Year reveals five different Spidey suits. While originally pitched as taking place in the MCU as a prequel to the events of Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Freshman Year seems to be dramatically different than originally believed. With the revelation that it will feature Norman Osborn in a mentor role to Peter Parker instead of Tony Stark, and appearances by characters like Doc Ock, Scorpion, and Daredevil who were not mentioned or referenced in the MCU films, it appears that this is a different take on the webhead’s origins.
That new dramatic take means a new suit. Spider-Man has one of the most iconic and recognizable superhero costumes of all time, yet the character has also had a number of iconic reimaginings of his suit. The MCU Spider-Man films featured a wide variety of suits used throughout, including variations on the Iron Spider and Spider-Man Noir suits in the comics. The first concept art for Spider-Man: Freshman Year showcased a different version of Spider-Man’s prototype suit at San Diego Comic-Con.
Now it appears that the suit will not be his only one. At San Diego Comic-Con during the Marvel Animation panel, via CabooseEK, the studio showcased artwork and designs for the series. One of them highlights different alternate costumes Spider-Man will wear in the series, and while no names were listed on them, they seem to be pulling from various Spider-Man comics.
CORRECTION* Spider-Man: Freshman Year isn’t canon, in this show Peter’s mentor is actually Norman Osborn instead of Tony. Also that lineup of villains?! Alternate suits too! Sign me all the way up! I hope it delivers. We haven’t had a good Spidey cartoon since Spectacular Spidey. pic.twitter.com/T6BxnVJwMT

While the center suit showcases the classic Spider-Man design, the rest seem to draw from other comics. The suit on the far left is Peter as The Hornet, another superhero title he takes on in the comics. The black suit seems to be a variation of the Dusk suit featuring Steve Ditko’s web wings design. The white suit looks almost like a direct pull from the Future Foundation costume, a suit worn by Spider-Man when he joined the team after the death of Johnny Storm, aka The Human Torch. And the final suit on the far right seems to be an original design for the series, featuring a yellow and teal costume with a red cape
How all these various suits factor into the plot of Spider-Man: Freshman Year remains to be seen but drawing from the various eras of Spider-Man comics suggests a very funny remaining of the character. The series will not premiere until 2024, but Spider-Man: Freshman Year has already been renewed for season 2. This opens the door for the creators to give their own spin on other classic Spider-Man suits like the Bombastic Bagman suit or the Superior Spider-Man outfit. With all of these announcements and reveals, there is certainly a lot to speculate on how Spider-Man: Freshman Year will be connected to the MCU or if it will forge its own path in the ever-expanding multiverse.
